Competitive Ballroom Dancing

This is totally random, but this is a little piece that our internal corporate communications groups did on me and my husband for the employee newsletter. Enjoy!

Marketing’s Marla Woodward has been a long-time dancer, starting with traditional tap, jazz, and ballet classes when she was about four years old. But it wasn’t until college that she discovered the joy of ballroom dance. In fact, Marla was a founding member of Michigan State University’s Competitive Ballroom Dance Team. The team was life-changing for Marla, not just because of the dance lessons and competitions, but because it was also where she and Michael Woodward fell in love (spoiler alert: they’re married now).

And while their relationship may have started with a waltz, neither had danced competitively since college. That all changed in October, when they decided to get back into the circuit at Chicago’s oldest ballroom dance competition, the Harvest Moon Ball. The competition included Standard (waltz, tango, foxtrot, and quickstep) and Latin (samba, cha-cha, rumba, and paso doble) dance categories at bronze, silver, gold, and open levels. Competitors were judged on poise, posture, musicality and expression, timing, presentation, and many more technical aspects as well. The Woodwards competed at the bronze level and took home first place for Standard and second place for Latin.

Now that they’ve dusted off their dancing shoes, Marla and Michael plan to trip the light fantastic in three or four more ballroom competitions in 2014, including the Michigan Dance Challenge in Dearborn. Good luck, Marla and Michael!
